I still remember on May 27 our minister, Datuk Seri Idris Jala said that the government should start cutting down the subsidies, if not by 2019 Malaysia could go bankrupt. And now, the cabinet decided to build a new Parliament in Putrajaya which will cost RM 800 million and the current building will be restored and maintained as a heritage building.
I really do not understand why a new Parliament building is needed. RM 800 million is not a small sum. Government should use it more efficiently on some projects that will benefit the rakyat especially the poors. And the government should not forget even if the current building to be preserved as heritage building, the building still needs to be maintenanced. And probably the government needs another few millions for that every year.
Government had spent a lot to repair and renovate the Parliament building. On 2005, RM 90 million was used for leakage, interior restoration and renovation. Two years later, another RM 12 million was used for repairs of second leakage. And now, the government needs another RM 150 million to fix the roof and electrical wiring.
The government, all MPs and all elected representatives should always remember that they are the wakil rakyat. They should always think for the rakyat first in all the decision they make and not for they own ‘comfortability’. ‘People First, Performance Now’! The government should take care the welfare of the people first!
